Residents warned against illegal connections
KHULA Village councillor Ntokozo Mlungwana urged ward 3 residents to desist from connecting electricity illegally as this adversely impacts the supply of electricity to the entire area.
Too many illegal connections in the ward have prompted Eskom to implement load reduction in the area, which means power is cut for a period of four hours, Mlungwana said.
‘On Thursday, Eskom began fixing illegal connections in the ward so residents can buy electricity as they should. About 50 households will be attended to, including those that did not have electricity,’ the councillor said.
It was hoped that this would decrease the implementation of load reduction in the ward, Mlungwana added.
The households that were provided with electricity for the first time are new, owned by residents that had recently moved into, acquired or built properties in the ward, the councillor said.
A process to identify child-headed homes, those of unemployed residents, and others who qualify to be placed under the indigent policy was under way so they could be provided with the available assistance, Mlungwana said.
‘We urge residents to stop connecting electricity illegally because Eskom applies the motto 'an injury to one is an injury to all', and so once it picks up that too many households are illegally connected, it implements load reductions.
'Also, illegal connections are dangerous and people can get seriously injured as they try to connect electricity illegally,’ the councillor said.
Eskom’s Joyce Zingoni confirmed that households that were not there when the area was originally electrified were being supplied with electricity.
She said it was projected that this project would be completed at the end of the month.
