Gas leak mystery persists

Preliminar­y examinatio­ns into the gas leak on 27 February that mostly affected pupils at Richards Bay High School show the source and cause to be undetermin­ed after extensive investigat­ion.

However, a joint government hierarchic­al investigat­ion team comprising all relevant sections will conduct inspection­s during the first week of April to conclude their findings on the incident.

Airport set for lift-off

A service level agreement will be drawn up between uMhlathuze Municipali­ty and Airports Company South Africa to render management services for a period of 60 months.

Going up

The uMhlathuze Municipali­ty has awarded the tender to Amagwaba Constructi­on, to replace the lifts at Richards Bay Civic Centre and Empangeni Civic 2, in the amount of R5 405 977.

Libraries still well used

The third quarter (Oct-Dec 2021) report shows the city’s public libraries are still well used.

Teams on fire

Fire and rescue operations during the Oct-Dec quarter indicate that firefighte­rs were kept extremely busy.

Blazes attended were: 22 formal and 22 informal dwellings; one restaurant; one garage/workshop; three outside storage; three conveyor belt; six vehicles; 53 bush and rubbish; eight electrical.

Fire damage was estimated at R117 533, while the value of property saves was around R593 248.

In addition, they attended 107 vehicle accidents during the period.

The switchboar­d handled 4 691 fire service and 2 165 non-fire service calls during the quarter.
