Zululand swimmer shines bright in Japan

- Keanan Pillay

LOCAL swimmer and coach Wendy Cook did not let delayed flights, lost luggage or even a typhoon stop her from putting in a sterling performance at the World Masters Aquatics in Fukuoka, Japan.

She finished 9th in the 100m breaststroke, but fell ill before her main race, the 50m breaststroke.

Wendy was one of 7 000 athletes representing more than 125 countries, with 128 swimmers in her age group alone.

“My trip was quite a challenge, but I met the most incredible swimmers from around the world,” she said.

“I gained so much knowledge and experience, not only from the challenges that I faced, but in the journey leading up to the event, which spanned more than three years owing to the constant postponements and Covid.

“I would like to thank the Richards Bay community who helped raise funds for me, who supported me, and encouraged me along the way.

“A very special thank you to King Cetshwayo District Aquatics, my swimmers and parents at Froggies Aquatics, Emile de Bruin, Sihle Mdunge and his team at Virgin Active, Sozo Christian Church, and many close friends, all of whom are too many to mention.

“Also a special mention to my brother Allan Fabian, who not only has lived the dream with me but still believes in the dream and contributed hugely to me getting to Japan.

“All glory goes to God for giving me the ability and passion to do what I do every day.

“I have taken a well-deserved rest and will start my preparation for the SA Masters Nationals in Johannesburg in March 2024 and, depending on finances, I will consider the World Champs in Singapore in 2025.

“A big part of the dream is to inspire others, especially my swimmers young and old, to never give up on their dreams. Age is just a number. I have learnt from this that a dream is not always just a destination.”

Wendy has plans to grow the masters swimmers in the district through her club, where she also coaches youngsters, competitive SSA swimmers, triathletes, open-water swimmers and adults.

“I coach all year round, but the new season started on 1 September. Swimming will always be a passion of mine and I hope to change people's lives through the sport.”
