New Kwambo shopping mall on the cards
KWAMBONAMBI residents could benefit from a new shopping mall if land negotiations go according to plan.
The details were unpacked by uMfolozi Mayor Xolani Bhengu during the IDP/draft budget roadshow at Dondotha sports ground on Thursday.
Bhengu explained that negotiations between the municipality and Transnet were 'at an advanced stage' for land in the KwaMbonambi CDB.
“We have agreed to pay R5-million to acquire the land.
We have some reserves that will enable us to buy [it],” said Bhengu.
“The land is where Transnet houses are located.
No one is using these houses. We are doing this to grow our local economy and to create jobs for our residents.
“This will stop people from having to spend money on transport going to Empangeni and Richards Bay to do their shopping and other services they should be getting locally.”
Addressing thousands of residents, Bhengu said negotiations started with Transnet after those with another company reached a 'deadlock'.
“The initial arrangement was to exchange our land with a farming company which agreed to the exchange, but in the end, gave terms and conditions. The most difficult one was that we had to wait until 2030 or pay millions of rands as they are waiting to harvest their plantations on that land.”
He said they have resolved to assist street vendors by building appropriate trading stalls at the site.
“Street vendors are exposed to the scorching sun and do not work when it is raining. We decided to develop their trading
stalls and build storerooms where they could keep their stock overnight.
“We will have security guards to prevent criminal activities during the night,” said Bhengu.
Other projects, such as a community hall, sports field, an access road, and the installation of master lights are set to be complete, with more projects approved for the new financial year.
KwaMbonambi SAPS member Sergeant Mthethwa also used the platform to encourage civil behaviour as the country approaches the national and provincial government elections.
