Further delay in Empangeni water pipeline upgrade
THE EMPANGENI water pipeline upgrade project is expected to experience further delays.
The city previously noted that the R40-million project, which entails replacing the old asbestos pipes between Empangeni and Ngwelezana, was scheduled to be completed by the end of June.
However, uMhlathuze spokesperson Mdu Ncalane this week confirmed that the city would be terminating its agreement with the current contractor who has been in charge of the project since it began last year.
‘We are in the process of terminating the contract as the contractor has failed to meet the required deadline. The city will employ a new contractor to complete the job,’ said Ncalane.
The project has been plagued by delays and has had business owners in the CBD up in arms over open trenches and poor management of the project as a whole.
The city previously apologied to businesses which have been affected by the ongoing project.
