THE South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) together with GroundWork is tomorrow (Friday) hosting an oil and gas exploration workshop in Richards Bay.

This is in connection with proposed gas exploration by Sasol and Eni off KZN’s coast, from Port Shepstone to north of Richards Bay.

‘KZN is renowned for its famous and beautiful beaches.

‘However, healthy oceans are critically important to marine life and coastal communities whose economies rely on tourism, fishing and recreational activities,’ said the SDCEA in a statement.

It said the workshop, which will be held at 10am at the Splendid Inn Bayshore in Meerensee, serves to inform interested and affected parties about the impacts and dangers of offshore oil and gas drilling along the coast of KZN.

Environmental Resources Management, the company tasked with undertaking environmental impact assessments for the gas exploration project, held a public meeting in Richards Bay, as well as others in other affected parts of the province, and is due to hold another subsequent to the release of its revised draft scoping report.
