ESikhaleni team bats its way to vic­tory

THE U19 eSikhaleni cricket team sur­prised the pun­dits by win­ning the 11th Sun­foil Town­ship and Ru­ral Cricket De­vel­op­ment Schools’ tour­na­ment at Hil­ton Col­lege on Sun­day.

The tour­na­ment is or­gan­ised by the Wil­low­ton Group, the KZN Cricket Union’s Town­ship and Ru­ral De­vel­op­ment Pro­gramme and KZN Depart­ment of Sport, Recre­ation, Art and Cul­ture.

The event hosts young play­ers from dis­ad­van­taged back­grounds re­sid­ing in town­ships and ru­ral ar­eas. Four teams from other prov­inces, as well as a team from Le­sotho, par­tic­i­pated.

Teams com­peted in 20/20 and 50 over games, with a to­tal of 48 matches be­ing played.

Play­ers who per­form at this level get to ap­ply for bur­saries and schol­ar­ships at top crick­et­ing schools and are placed on high-per­for­mance pro­grammes.

In the fi­nals, eSikhaleni picked up a six wicket win over Western Prov­ince af­ter chas­ing down 110 runs.

The pro­gramme cur­rently works with 9 015 chil­dren in 48 town­ships and ru­ral ar­eas as far afield as Pon­gola and New­cas­tle.
