ESikhaleni team bats its way to victory
THE U19 eSikhaleni cricket team surprised the pundits by winning the 11th Sunfoil Township and Rural Cricket Development Schools’ tournament at Hilton College on Sunday.
The tournament is organised by the Willowton Group, the KZN Cricket Union’s Township and Rural Development Programme and KZN Department of Sport, Recreation, Art and Culture.
The event hosts young players from disadvantaged backgrounds residing in townships and rural areas. Four teams from other provinces, as well as a team from Lesotho, participated.
Teams competed in 20/20 and 50 over games, with a total of 48 matches being played.
Players who perform at this level get to apply for bursaries and scholarships at top cricketing schools and are placed on high-performance programmes.
In the finals, eSikhaleni picked up a six wicket win over Western Province after chasing down 110 runs.
The programme currently works with 9 015 children in 48 townships and rural areas as far afield as Pongola and Newcastle.
