Anger over dead puppies dumped in main road

- Orrin Singh

EMPANGENI residents are outraged following the discovery of four dead puppies in a busy area of town.

Steven Whittaker made the discovery while cycling with his three sons on Sunday afternoon.

Whittaker said at approximately 3.15pm, while cycling down the main road towards the Bimbos petrol station, they came across four dead puppies near the bus stop area.

‘It wasn’t the most pleasant thing to come across, especially when with your children.’

Whittaker said it appeared as if the puppies had been there for a few hours.

‘They had not gone stiff yet, which indicated that they had been dumped there sometime during the day, perhaps in the morning.

‘I placed them into the concrete bin next to which they were laying and contacted the SPCA.

SPCA Vice Chairperson Cheryl Whittaker said they were disturbed by the discovery.

‘I contacted Debbie Cross of Empangeni SPCA, who immediately went to collect them so as not to upset sensitive people, bearing in mind that the area would be frequented by commuters who wait for their bus transport in the morning.

‘It just seems very strange that all four of these pups were dead.

‘They were only between 10 and 14 days old and didn’t appear hurt or abused in any way.’

Whittaker said if people have a problem with their dogs falling pregnant constantly, they should seek help from the SPCA.

‘There is really no excuse for just dumping these puppies out in the open in plain sight of residents and commuters,’ said Whittaker.
