Women abuse must be stopped says Buthelezi
IT is sickening to see the ongoing attacks and abuse directed at women despite their enormous contribution to freedom and social justice.
IFP President, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who was a keynote speaker at the IFP Women’s Brigade Rally held in Ngwelezana at the weekend, said women were being brutalised and killed at an alarming rate.
He said the incidences of murder and attempted murder by intimate partners were very high.
‘What is it in the psyche of our nation that makes women and girls so vulnerable to attack? This must be stopped.’
He said a drastic change in the hearts and minds of elected leaders was needed to place this crisis at the forefront of government intervention.
‘We have made strides in changing legislation to protect and empower our women, but we have not done enough. This work must continue.
‘There is still tremendous inequality and injustice in our country. While Women’s Month is about celebrating extraordinary women who are shaping the politics, industry, creative arts and academia, it must also be a time to think about the women in our lives who do so much for the people around them.
‘Today the social activists who make a difference in this country are largely women. It is through the work - and often unpaid work - of women that communities are able to develop and survive.’
