Experienced people must continue with mentorship of the youth

- Wiseman Mthiyane

EXPERTS in their line of work should never be allowed to retire.

They must return to their communities and plough back their expertise, knowledge and experience.

This sentiment was shared by University of Zululand lecturer Mayoyo Ndaba at a farewell function for Ngwelezana Circuit Manager, Vusimuzi Mhlungu.

Mhlungu, affectionately known as VO, was praised for his humbleness, punctuality and hard work.

‘As your former colleague, I know the type of leader you are. You were a good mentor to me and others while you were our principal at Ongoye High School,’ said Ndaba.

‘We must never see a school lacking leadership when you are there. I’m challenging you to groom others.’

Ndaba’s sentiments were echoed by King Cetshwayo District Director David Chonco, who described Mhlungu as a man of integrity and influence.

‘His steady approach in resolving problems without having to raise a voice was unbelievable. This was one manager who possessed a different mindset,’ he said.

Mhlungu, who has spent 38 years of his life working for the Department of Education, said his success and journey would not have been possible without the support of school principals, parents and other stakeholders.

‘I have always been passionate about my work. I’m proud of what we achieved together in the 23 years of my tenure as circuit manager.

‘The professionalism all of us displayed in improving teaching and learning at schools around Ngwelezana is amazing,’ he said.
