Locals to compete in Durban skateboarding tournament
TWO local skateboarders will be heading off to Durban this weekend to compete for the crown of ‘King of Skate’.
This after Llewellyn Drummond and Mason van der Merwe pulled out their best bag of tricks at the Richards Bay leg of the event held at the weekend.
Drummond and Van der Merwe ousted a number of Richards Bay skaters in a game of S.K.A.T.E, which saw them competing in the final.
Popular among the skateboarding fraternity, the game is played by mimicking a trick that the first contestant performs.
If a skater fails to do so they get the letter S and when they finally have all the letters that make up the word S.K.A.T.E they are eliminated from the tournament.
Skaters enjoyed the day with loads of prizes that were up for grabs courtesy of Zoo York SA.
Drummond was the winner on the day, with Van der Merwe taking second place.
The pair will this weekend head off to the Durban North Beach Skate Park where they will face the six winners of the Durban and Pietermaritzburg legs of the tournament to be ‘King of Skate’.
The overall event is hosted by former Richards Bay resident Sheldon Els, co-owner of Minority Skate, in conjunction with Skate Vision.
