State-of-the-art scanner at Netcare The Bay

-

Richardson Udarajh and Partners, the X-ray department, acquired a new computed tomography (CT or CAT) scanning unit which was unveiled earlier this month. It is the most advanced technology available in Zululand.

The GE CT scanner ensures the lowest radiation dose possible and is used to obtain top quality diagnostic images with scans completed at a faster rate.

Dr Mark Richardson and Dr Kavistra Udarajh said there is also a significant reduction in the volume of contrast medium (iodinated X-ray dye) used, making it much safer for the patient and there is a cost reduction as well. ‘The fastest rotation time is 0.5s to do a full revolution, and 64 slices can be acquired in just half a second.

‘A full chest scan can be done in three seconds, reducing the patient’s time in the department.

‘No sedation is required for confused or restless patients and the movement and breathing artifacts are minimal with these fast scans, and therefore far superior images are acquired.’
