Maths leak rumour untrue

MATRIC final examinations in the King Cetshwayo District are running smoothly, and any claims of a mathematics question paper being leaked, are not true.

This was the assurance given by King Cetshwayo District Director, David Chonco, who said there was no tangible evidence that the paper was leaked.

‘We heard just rumours about paper leak, but there is nothing confirming it. The exam is going very well, and we are monitoring it,’ he said.

Chonco’s response came in the wake of a statement issued by the National Department of Basic Education, which also distanced itself from a letter making reference to a mathematics question paper leak.

Department spokesman, Elijah Mhlanga said the fake letter with the heading: ‘Notice of illegal distribution of matric final examinations’ contains false information.

‘The writer states that a mathematics question has leaked. While the so-called circular has our logo, it has no address, contact details or the name of the author. It is clearly designed to cause confusion,’ said Mhlanga.

He appealed to parents, teachers, learners and department officials to ignore the fake letter and stay focused on the job at hand.

‘The reality is that examinations are proceeding well across the country. No question paper has leaked, and no circular has been issued regarding any re-writing of any papers.

‘There are no supplementary examinations in 2019, but there is a full exam in May and in June next year,’ he said.

Mhlanga urged learners and teachers to continue demonstrating commitment and good conduct as the examinations continue.
