Bayside waste licence appeal open

- Tamlyn Jolly

INTERESTED and affected parties have until 13 November to appeal a positive Waste Management Licence (WML) issued to South32’s Bayside site in Richards Bay.

Sustainable Environmental Solutions was appointed by South32 Aluminium SA to undertake the required application for a WML for the activities necessary for the decommissioning of the legacy landfills at the Bayside Aluminium smelter site.

The national Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) issued a positive WML on 11 October based on a number of key factors.

These included the final Basic Assessment report, the Record of Decision from the Department of Water and Sanitation, the Bayside Wetland Assessment and the Quantification of Fluoride Scenarios Report.

Appeals must be submitted to the appeal administrator in writing, in the form of the questionnaire, and an appeal and response form emailed to all registered interested and affected parties.

It must be copied to the applicant, any interested and affected party, and any organ of state with an interest in the matter.

It can be emailed to appealsdirectorate@environment.gov. za.
