AN in­tox­i­cated chain­saw-wield­ing tree feller caused a com­mo­tion near Five Ways Spar in Em­pan­geni last Fri­day.

Lo­cal res­i­dent Chris Whit­taker said he ini­tially saw the man ly­ing on his back near the traf­fic cir­cle, with his chain­saw on full tilt.

Whit­taker ap­proached him as he felt that he could pose a haz­ard to mem­bers of the pub­lic.

‘He then be­gan chas­ing me with his chain­saw around the traf­fic cir­cle. His col­leagues tried to in­ter­vene, but he chased them as well.

Whit­taker pulled out his pep­per spray to con­front the de­ranged man.

‘Once I did so and ad­vanced to­ward him, one of his col­leagues ap­proached me and apol­o­gised on his be­half.

‘They said they would keep him un­der con­trol.’

Em­pan­geni Com­mu­nity Polic­ing Fo­rum Chair­per­son, Zonita Grobbe­laar, con­firmed they had re­ceived the com­plaint and would ad­dress the sit­u­a­tion.
