Rogue hyena causes problems

- Orrin Singh

KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife is investigating allegations of a rogue hyena causing mischief in the Obizo area, about 30km north of Empangeni.

According to Ezemvelo’s King Cetshwayo District Conservation Officer, Phumla Zulu, reports of a hyena in the area surfaced last week.

‘We initially received reports from the local iNduna, alleging that a hyena killed a calf last week.

‘We went to the communal area near Chrystal Holdings Farm and investigated, but did not find any tangible evidence of a hyena being in the area,’ Zulu said.

‘According to the community, they know it’s a hyena because they hear it calling at night.

‘We will in the meantime continue going into the area to monitor the situation.

‘Hyenas are extremely dangerous animals and have one of the strongest bite forces in the world.

‘We therefore have to take this matter seriously and act swiftly in capturing and relocating this animal,’ she said.
