Izihlabani Awards honour legends

LEGENDS will be honoured at the House of Shaka second annual Izihlabani Awards event in Empangeni next month.

The prestigiou­s ceremony will be held at the Umfolozi Casino Hotel Resort on Friday, 14 December.

The awards will be part of the House of Shaka choral musical staged by the Heritage Developmen­t Trust, led by Professor Musa Xulu.

These awards aim to recognise successful individual­s in the fields of African intellectu­alism, creativity and liberation heritage.

They are supported by the National Lotteries Commission as part of the House of Shaka brand, as well as local municipali­ties.

In the past those honoured include the late Dr JL Dube (ANC founder), Princess Magogo (mother of iNkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi), and Professor Thandwa Mthembu (Principal of Durban University of Technology).

Entertainm­ent will be provided by Soweto Opera Quadro, ELCC Music Ministry, The Sky, Mxosheni Primary School and others.

Among ledgends to be honoured during the special awards are Dr Sibusiso Joel Ndebele (Liberation Heritage), Dr Mbongeni Ngema (Musical Theatre), Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme (Liberation Heritage), Professor CT Msimang (IsiZulu Literature), Professor DBZ Ntuli (IsiZulu Literature), Professor OEHM Nxumalo (IsiZulu Literature), iNkosi Victoria Dube (Traditiona­l Leadership), Professor Vika Gabela (Education) and Professor

Mazisi Kunene (Literature: posthumous).
