Sharks Board probe on­go­ing

THE in­ves­ti­ga­tion into the KZN Sharks Board tragedy which last Au­gust saw three of the five crew mem­bers drown when their boat flipped off Richards Bay, is still on­go­ing and has been es­ca­lated to higher au­thor­i­ties.

This, ac­cord­ing to the Richards Bay SAMSA (South African Mar­itime Safety Au­thor­ity) which could not com­ment fur­ther.

The tragedy oc­curred when the Richards Bay-based Sharks Board crew mem­bers were ser­vic­ing the shark nets at Ne­wark Beach in high seas and strong winds.

Skip­per Richard Gumede and Mandla Gumede were de­clared de­ceased on scene and their bod­ies re­cov­ered by Alka­ntstrand Sport and Recre­ation of­fi­cer Shakes Hi­ra­man and the NSRI re­spec­tively.

The body of Siyabonga Ga­bela was re­cov­ered some days later af­ter be­ing spot­ted by a lo­cal fish­er­man.

Eric Buthelezi and S’Qiniseko Ngob­ese have made a full re­cov­ery.
