Drug rehab facility stymied

- Conelia Harry

THE opening of a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre in Brackenham this week met with mixed reaction as community members questioned the lack of community involvement and public participation.

The establishment, which will be run from a residential property in Cibotium street, was requested to put its operations on hold after the Brackenham Community Civic Watch (BCCW) and Ward 26 Councillor Leslie Joseph intervened. They requested information about the processes which were followed to set up the facility.

BCCW Chairperson Ray Govender said he was invited to the official opening on Monday evening and it was the first time he had heard about the venture.

‘My house is in the same street and we were unaware of their plans to establish a rehab centre in the vicinity.

‘I informed them that as an owner and civic watch representative I was disappointed at the lack of communication to the surrounding neighbours, community leaders and the relevant authorities, and that we would not agree to this,’ said Govender.

Cllr Joseph concurred that drug abuse was rife and a major concern in the community but said the correct procedures and channels must be followed for such an establishment.

‘The presence of such a facility in a residential area will also raise concerns over safety, security as well as access to parking.

‘I have requested the owners to place all operations on hold and will meet with them soon to discuss the matter further and ensure all procedures are followed correctly,’ said Joseph.

Community member Ivan Naidoo said while there is a need for such a facility (rehab) in society, before approval, a full environmental impact assessment study which will inform the validity of the application together with the participation of the Department of Social Development, must be completed,

‘Community participation will validate the process and address the concerns raised by residents,’ said Naidoo.
