Nothing holds brave Lusiwe back

- Richard Springorum

DESPITE not being blessed with what the world would accept as a ‘normal’ body shape, 13-year-old Lusiwe Mlotshwa has never allowed her physique to hold her back from living life to the full.

Born in 2004 with severe bow legs, this ‘impediment’ has only served to mould this beautiful, fun-loving Grade 8 Richards Bay Christian School pupil into the confident, outgoing and adventurous individual that she is today.

‘I have never felt sorry for myself or used my situation as an excuse to define me. My family, friends, peers and teachers treat me the same as everybody else and challenge me to always push myself to reach my full potential.’

Lusiwe participates in swimming (all strokes except butterfly), hockey (goalkeeper), soccer (defender), athletics (shot putt and short sprints), tennis and dancing.

She signed up with Richards Bay Dance Incorporated in 2015 under Romanda Beukes where she does hip hop dancing.

‘Dancing and acting are my passions and I was so happy and honoured to have received the Hip Hop Bomb award last year at my dance school.

‘Being at such an amazing, small and loving school has aided me with my differences. I have never been a victim of bullying or been ‘left out’ of anything at school or in life.

‘When I go out in public places people tend to stare at me, which initially was hurtful, but that changed once I learnt that what other people think does not matter.’

Lusiwe underwent an unsuccessful remedial operation at the age of five.

‘Having such intense surgery comes with many risks and the first one was unsuccessful. The doctors told me to come back when I am 16.’

This adrenaline junkie suffers no pain and has learnt to adapt over the years.

‘Younger children ask me what is wrong with my legs and then I just say I was born this way - and they simply accept it,’ says Lusiwe.

‘I have known this amazing, strong and determined young lady from when she started with us and am always amazed by what she achieves,’ says Richards Bay Christian School Marketing and Communications Manager, Cherona Dannhauser.

‘She is not only an inspiration to her school friends and teachers, but has also inspired many people along the way through dancing.

‘She is always willing to step up and participate and her worth and personality are far greater than the challenge her legs bring.’

Lusiwe told the Zululand Observer that parents with children who have disabilities need to support them and encourage them to stay strong and not worry about other people’s opinions.

‘Constantly reassure your children and always be there for them.

‘I just want people to know that one’s situation does not define you. Stop making excuses. One can achieve anything you put your mind to through the glory of God.’

I will not be defined by others, nor limit my activities because I am different
