Leaity sets the pace

- Roger Lavoipierre

WITH the second round of the PSG two bowl trips tournament having been completed last week, Dion Leaity now leads the pack with a score of 4+46.

But lurking in second place on 4+24 is Team Roly.

These two teams meet today (Thursday) in a top-of-the-table clash that could have an important bearing on who will emerge as the eventual tournament winner.

Leaity earned his place at the top of the log with a big 25-2 win over Round Table 2, which also gave him the session prize sponsored by Luis de Vasconcelos.

Only five teams remain with a full house four points and they will be scrambling to remain in contention as the tournament reaches the halfway stage.

At the bottom end of the log six teams are yet to register any points and competition there should be just as fierce. Nixon/Billy Kruse, Barry Mutlow/ Colin Gorlei, Miskiet Ferreira/Steve Oberholzer, Danie Schoeman/Jaco van Zyl and Mike Bowman/Mike Butler.

In the knockout stages played at the Bowling Club on Sunday, Schoeman beat Nixon 17-11 and Bowman beat Ferreira 13-10, with the winners moving into the semi-finals.

The semi-final between Mutlow and Walters was touch and go until the 14th end when Mutlow, leading by a single shot at 13-12, closed out the game with a 4 followed by a 3 to move into the final with a 20-12 victory.

The second semi-final was similar in nature with both skips in excellent form.

After 12 ends, the score was locked at 9-9, and once again it was a late 2 and 5 burst by Bowman which put paid to Schoeman’s hopes of progressing to the final.

Despite dropping a shot on the final end, Bowman took the game 16-10.

In the final, Bowman led from the start, although there was never more than a shot or two in it.

Playing the final end Mutlow trailed by a single shot, 12-13.

With Bowman holding shot and lying game, Mutlow, with the last bowl of the game trailed the jack to pick up 5 shots and take the title by 17 shots to 13.

Section winners in the women’s group were Joey Evans/Michelle Morgan, Lettie Eybers/Christine Samuels and Ronell Greeff/Essel Schoeman.

In the round robin, Evans beat Eybers 22-14, and Greeff beat Eybers19-15, which meant Evans and Greeff would contest the final.

This turned out to be something of a mismatch, with the powerful combo of Greeff and Schoeman dominating throughout to claim the title with a convincing 25-2

victory.
