Sharp police get their suspects

- Larry Bentley

DURING an intelligence driven operation by KwaMsane Tactical Response Team members in the Ezibayeni, Hluhluwe and Nongoma areas, four suspects were arrested for the possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and a stolen vehicle.

The operation started in the early hours of Friday, 20 July and continued until Sunday morning.

They targeted the mostwanted suspects linked to various cases.

During the operation the members saw a blue Toyota Tazz with four occupants travelling in the Mthekwini area outside Hluhluwe.

They tried to intercept the vehicle, but it sped off.

During the crossfire a suspect was injured before the vehicle came to a halt.

A second suspect was arrested, while the other two fled on foot.

A firearm with 11 rounds of ammunition was found on one of the suspects.

The injured suspect is under police guard in hospital where he was taken for medical treatment.

Search continued

The team searched tirelessly for the two suspects and traced them to Nongoma, on their way to Gauteng.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the firearm was stolen in Gauteng during a robbery in 2014 and the vehicle was stolen in Hluhluwe this month.

Two suspects are also linked to charges of robberies, murders and attempted murder committed in Gauteng and Ezibayeni.

They will also be profiled to check if they are linked to other cases reported in Zululand and surrounding areas.

All the arrested suspects are aged between 20 and 28.

They are expected to appear in the Hluhluwe Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 24 July on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property and attempted murder of police officials.
