Spirit of voluntarism commended

- Wiseman Mthiyane

CITY of uMhlathuze Mayor, Cllr Mduduzi Mhlongo has commended residents of Ward 27 for making a difference in people’s lives.

He was speaking after the completion of a two-roomed house built by volunteers of the King Cetshwayo ANC Branch.

The house, belonging to a senior destitute citizen, gogo Thabede of Manqomfini Reserve, replaces an old dilapidated mud house, which she and her family were using as a shelter.

‘I’m happy to see the spirit of Mandela, voluntarism and ubuntu taking centre stage in this ward. How I so wish we as a society should continue rendering community service to all our people, the same way Madiba did,’ he said.

Branch Chairperson Dr Mfowethu Zungu said building a house for gogo Thabede was part of his party’s programme of action for the year 2018.

‘We started a few months ago to build this house we are completing today.

It is also important for us to be doing something good for a senior citizen, on a day when the world is commemorating what could have been Madiba’s 100th birthday.

‘This house was built with cement blocks and plastered and painted by our volunteers. As the chairperson of this branch working with local councillor, Simphiwe Mzimela, we further donated building material and coordinated the building process for two additional houses. One house is in the Oqwalini area and the other at KwaShandu next to eMathankini, said Zungu.
