Soul Treasure in running for SATMA award

- Wellington Makwakwa

ENSELENI-born musician and song writer Bonginkosi Ngema (23), aka Soul Treasure, is a good example of passion, dedication and perseverance leading to great things.

After facing struggles in his personal life, he has now been nominated for the South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) in the Best Afro Soul category.

Ngema started his music career in 2006; but it has not been smooth sailing.

He lost his father in 1996 and was raised by his grandmother and had to fight his way to the top.

‘I was able to study and finish school and enrolled for tertiary education despite all the challenges,’ he said.

According to Soul Treasure, he was bitten by a music bug in church and joined the choir. Soon after he became a member of a local youth music group.

In 2010 he joined the music gang F Crew.

He then started working as a solo Afro Pop artist and released a song titled Jehovah Jairah.

For weeks the track stayed on top of the music charts at various radio stations.

After his debut, he poured his heart and soul into his music and released his EP titled Been Traveling, followed by a powerful Afro Soul project titled Izindaba Zothando.

On his journey, Soul Treasure has collaborated with various artists such as the accapella group C.Joy, Hurricanez, and OMAZ award winner Asap Fancy.

He has also shared the stage with acts such as controversial rapper Ricky Ricky, dance queen Babes Wodumo and hip-hop man Kwesta.

He is currently working on his next singles project, featuring Colombia hip-hop duo BlackDiamo.
