Larney’s Army wins the race for tournament honours

- Roger Lavoipierre

THIS weekend, local bowls will be taking a bit of a breather owing to the playing of the All Natal men’s and women’s fours, which will be played at Port Natal.

Next week, 4/5 August, the District Annual General Meeting as well as the squad practice will be taking place in Vryheid.

It goes without saying that the lifeblood of our local clubs is their annual sponsored tournaments and the success of these tournaments depends entirely on the generosity of the sponsors, to whom a great debt of gratitude is owed and to the bowlers who enter.

It is therefore gratifying to report that last weekend, the Richards Bay Bowls Club hosted their annual Gecko Inn sponsored tournament, which was a resounding success.

Squeezing seven rinks onto the greens, the organisers were able to successfully cater for no less than 112 bowlers in 28 teams.

It is no mean feat catering for such large numbers and Richards Bay must be congratulated on how smoothly everything ran.

After two days of battle on the greens, there had to be a winner, and hats off to Larny’s Army, skipped by Grant Walters who was ably supported by Billy King, George Stewart and Michaela Smith who won the race to the tape.

The Empangeni Country Club will be hosting their tournament on 25/26 August and it is to be hoped that bowlers will once again rally round and submit their entries timeously.

Although no details are to hand, a little bird tells me that the Empangeni Bowling Club has obtained a sponsor for a tournament similar, but different, to their ever popular two bowl trips competition, which is to be run over four Thursdays during October.
