Women focus on health

- Conelia Harry

WOMEN’S health issues came under the spotlight during a Women’s Month awareness event at Mqedi Community Centre on Friday in which more than 80 community members participated.

It provided a platform for women, both young and old, to have their questions addressed on different topics.

Speakers from various government departments - education, health, social development and agriculture - as well as emotional wellness service provider LifeLine Zululand and other stakeholders equipped the women with knowledge on how to deal with life’s challenges and social ills affecting society.

Mandlazini Clinic’s Sister NP Jiyane encouraged women to use the services provided by the clinic and urged patients to visit the healthcare facility before they become too ill.

‘Community members must have regular testing and screening for different conditions and begin treatment if necessary.

‘Hygiene plays an integral part in combatting sickness and this type of education starts in the home. Young girls need to take extra care of their developing bodies,’ Sister Jiyane said.

‘The clinic offers free contraceptives and all women are educated on the different options available.

‘In our communities cancer is another topic that is not spoken about, but we must be aware of the different types of cancers and educate our young girls and women to regularly do breast self-examinations.’
