Cyclist fraternity supports each other

- Tamlyn Jolly

RICHARDS Bay cyclists clubbed in for a token donation to their fellow cyclist and friend, Joyce Benade, whose family lost their house and belongings in a fire last weekend.

Organised by Paul Mathee, the cyclists left Richards Bay and cycled to KwaMbonambi on Saturday as a surprise for Joyce.

There they handed over the hamper and cycling clothes as a gesture to show they are thinking of her and will help in any way they can.

‘I am thankful to everybody who contributed towards my gifts, and to Bell for the cycling kit and shirts,’ said Joyce.

‘It is a truly humbling experience to see how the community is embracing us.’

The Benade family, well known and much liked in KwaMbonambi, lost everything they have when their house burnt down last Saturday.

Joyce had been in St Lucia and her husband working in Mtubatuba at the time.

Neighbours acted quickly when smoke was first seen, but managed to salvage only some furniture and garage contents.

The dogs survived but their four cats perished in the blaze

‘People immediately contacted us, wanting to give us furniture, household appliances and anything else, but honestly we don’t have anywhere to keep any household items for the time being.

‘We are humbled by this experience and do appreciate all the help and concern.’
