Transnet Freight Rail scoops three awards

TRANSNET Freight Rail (TRF) scooped three awards at the 30th Logistics Achiever Awards ceremony in Johannesburg last week.

Among the awards received was a bronze award for the Mandlazini Chrome Hub.

The hub is an offloading facility located next to the Port of Richards Bay.

‘It is Transnet’s response to increased chrome demand, storage capacity limitations at the port and the need to improve efficiencies at the Dry Bulk Terminal (DBT) and train turnaround-times,’ Transnet Freight Rail said.

The company said it designed the facility together with Unathi Siyanda Logistic Services (ULS).

‘Although commissioned at the end of 2017, TFR had railed 39 150 tons by March this year and customers exported 12 300 tons.

‘This solution took 1 151 trucks off the road. Close co-operation between exporters, shipping lines, Transnet Freight Rail and Transnet Port Terminal was the key success factor of the project.’

TRF also won the platinum award for the Maputo Corridor Optimisation project and a gold award for the Afrimat iron ore loading facility.

Chief Executive Ravi Nair applauded the teams for the accolades and for their innovative thinking.

‘These projects are clear evidence of what is possible if we collaborate with customers and strategic partners.’

‘Collaboration enables us to design and implement solutions which stimulate job creation and contribute towards reducing the carbon footprint by switching from road to rail transport,’ Nair said.
