Uplifting varied small businesses in Ulundi

- Larry Bentley

THE Ulundi Municipality hosted a local economic development (LED) indaba on Tuesday.

Local entrepreneurs were given the opportunity to display their products, which ranged from vegetables to craft work and catering services.

The function was supported by departments of Economic Development, Tourism and Environment Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Agriculture and Rural Development, who gave presentations.

Other speakers represented the Small Enterprise Development Agency, the Siyasiza Trust and Zululand Anthracite Colliery.

In his address, Ulundi Mayor Wilson Ntshangase said that each of the 24 wards within the municipality would be allocated R90 000 for small business development.

A change from past practices, however, is that there will only be two beneficiaries per ward, each receiving R45 000.

He says it is hoped that with this larger investment, enterprises will be able to develop much quicker as was the case with smaller grants.
