Audi parting with the four rings logo?
Audi is reportedly considering moving on from its iconic ‘four rings’ logo. This is based on an alleged new trademark application filed in Germany and the United States.
Despite posting no documents or indeed a link confirming the alleged submission, online forum quattroworld.com claims that it has obtained two images that could feature as Ingolstadt’s new corporate identity.
While both retain the oval shapes, the first depiction does without all of the various links, while the second only keeps the central link to form a mirror image.
According to the article, the reasons for the new logo are unknown, but could likely be as a result of the automaker wanting a simple refresh or highlighting its future models as being connected.
Originating from 1932 with the combination of the DKW, Wanderer, Audi and Horch marques to form Auto Union, only Audi, meaning ‘listen’ in Latin, has remained despite a recent report claiming that the Horch name will return on an ultra-luxurious version of the A8 as a rival for the next Mercedes Maybach S-class.
The filing of the application comes just over a year after Audi revealed that the A8 would become the first model to incorporate its new badge designation, which consisted of the traditional engine displacement nomenclatures being replaced by a standardised measurement from 30-70 based on power outputs.
