Rain disrupts senior singles tournament

- Roger Lavoipierre

ALTHOUGH Saturday’s rain was most welcome, it did have the effect of disrupting the playing of the Zululand senior singles which was due to be played at the Empangeni Bowling Club.

Play on Saturday had to be cancelled with the round robin matches being moved to Sunday.

The following section winners will now meet in the knockout stages which will be played on a date and at a venue still to be advised.

In the women’s section, defending champion Yvonne Steenkamp will meet Anita Scott in the final, while in the men’s group Danie Schoeman, Brian Edwards, Mike Bowman, Barry Mutlow, Dirk Norval and Mike Butler are set to clash.

This weekend both the men’s and women’s Zululand open singles will be played at Mtunzini and the Empangeni Bowling Club respectively.

Thirty-three men and eighteen women will be doing battle for the right to qualify for the district play-offs.

The following Zululand players have been invited to the preliminary masters which is to be played in Newcastle early in the new year - Jaco van Zyl, Chalk Kellaway, Bobby Smith, Mike Lovell, Helga Kauz, Helene de Wet, Michelle Morgan, Tienkie van Vuuren and Odette Allan.

The winners of this tournament will join Dion Leaity, Mike Bowman and Esell Schoeman in the masters proper which will be played at a later date.

The selectors have also announced the teams for the quadrangular tournament to be played on the south coast in February. The following Zululand players have been included:

Open side: Dion Leaity, Miskiet Ferreira, Esell Schoeman and Helga Kauz.

B side: Chalk Kellaway, Jaco van Zyl, Tienkie van Vuuren, Odette Allan, Michelle Morgan and Helene de Wet.

Senior side: Brian Edwards, Billy Kruze, Danie Schoeman, George Stewart, Gloria Garbutt and Joey Evans.

President’s side: Mike Lovell, Bobby Smith and Marie-Lou Sugden. Twentytwo teams took to the greens at the Empangeni Bowling Club last Thursday when their Toyota Twilight Bowls tournament got off to a rousing start.

The session prize, sponsored by Miskiet Engineering, was won by the Aligators team, who beat TT Rohrs-Duvenage by 18 shots.

The tournament will continue each Thursday for the next six weeks.
