Cansa relay event all set for Saturday
IT’S all systems go for this year’s Cansa Relay for Life event on Saturday at ZCBF Community Park in Richards Bay.
Organisers have confirmed that preparations are all completed for the Cansa flagship project which has made a return to this region and will remain on the annual events calendar.
The committee is ready to welcome and host the Zululand community, cancer sufferers, supporters and especially the survivors from 6pm to 6am on Sunday and to honour all those involved in the fight against cancer.
This iconic event enables the public to recruit friends, family, co-workers and neighbours to form a relay team of 10 members.
On the day of the relay, team members take turns walking around the track for 12 hours, making sure that someone from their team is on the track at all times.
Participants enjoy camping-out, entertainment, good food, games and community camaraderie and all share a common purpose which is their desire to fight cancer and to support CANSA in its work.
Under the theme’ The Power of Purple’, the event has the
threefold purpose of celebrating those who have survived cancer, remembering those who lost the brave fight, and creating awareness about cancer.
Event chairperson Erika Vermaak, confirmed on Wednesday that 16 teams had successfully registered and a host of stall holders were also booked.
She hoped that more teams and cancer survivors would finalise their last minute registrations as well, to boost the number of participants.
‘We want our community to come out and show their support and we are inviting all businesses, schools, community groups, charities and other organisations to participate in the event and help create cancer awareness.’ Of course, it is not expected that every supporter can stay for the 12-hour duration, but the opening hours are especially moving and should not be missed.
‘Bikers’ from our local community will hold a mass bikers ride at 8pm, just before the Luminaria lap, which is significant to those caregivers whose loved one is no longer with them as the lap ceremony provides individuals an opportunity to reflect, remember and heal. ‘This is a special appeal to all bikers to join for this special ride and after the revving of motorcycles, we will have total silence as the candle-lit Luminaria lap gets under way.’
