Parkrun grows in popularity
DESPITE the torrential heavy rains and cold weather, avid parkrun competitors still turned out for the 5km route from the Zululand Multi Sport Club in Richards Bay on Saturday.
The popular family event is run every Saturday morning at 7am and has seen an increased average of 320 athletes competing.
The route caters for all road pounders and provides a fun and safe environment for athletes to get their training run in for the day.
Athletes start at the Zululand Multi Sport Club and migrate down a gravel road past the Bay Hall which links into a single forest track section, before looping back onto the gravel road which heads back towards the Bay Hall.
Competitors then complete a loop section on Pelican Island before heading back to the club house.
To join the parkrun family, one must register online for a unique barcode which allows individuals to see their times and their ranking in their age group within the country.
The mission of the event is to provide free, timed 5km runs to every community in the country, therefore increasing participation within sports in SA and slowly making the country happier and healthier.
