Fraudster flees after fleecing car owner

- Conelia Harry

AN ESIKHALENI resident was defrauded of R80 000 when his vehicle transaction deal ended in disaster last week and the ‘buyer’ fled with his BMW sports vehicle.

Joey Mdluli had entered into a sale agreement and despite following the correct procedure, compiling all the documents and ensuring the cash reflected in his account before officially handing over the vehicle, he was scammed.

According to Mdluli, the buyer from Mandeni had said he was a doctor by profession and used a business cheque to pay for the transaction.

‘We only later discovered it was a fake cheque, but when I printed my bank statement it showed that the money was in the account and then later vanished.

‘It was supposed to clear in my account after a few days and I handed over the vehicle.

‘Through investigations, I found that he is a fraudster and has been on the run but I still have the log book and am hoping the vehicle will be found soon.

‘I was selling the car and finalising a deal to purchase a new one, but this has set everything back,’ said Mdluli.
