Oktoberfest launches yacht tourism season
The annual Oktoberfest held at Zululand Yacht Club (ZYC) on Saturday was once again a major drawcard for residents and visitors alike.
People flocked from far and wide to enjoy an afternoon and evening of fun, entertainment and - of course - craft beer.
Among those enjoying the fest were Robbie and Bev Collins, visiting yachtsmen from Seattle who have been living at sea since 2011.
‘Out of all the yacht clubs we have been to recently, Richards Bay has been an amazing stop where we can explore the local area and our yacht can undergo the repairs it needs,’ said Bev Collins.
‘It’s great to be on land again after the crossing from Madagascar, and the beer fest is a perfect way to start our time on South African soil.’
The Collins’ are just one of a host of international yachts expected at ZYC as they vacation in Richards Bay and surrounding areas before setting sail to their next destination. About 50 international yachts are expected in Richards Bay during the course of the coming weeks, with each expected to spend about two weeks in the area.
They will explore the region, visiting game reserves and going on the township tour of eSikhaleni with the uMhlathuze Community Tourism Organisation, among other things.
‘We always look forward to the Oktoberfest, and I know that our members as well as the general public also do, it’s a fantastic social event,’ said ZYC Commodore, Wayne Bird.
‘It’s also tremendous to have so many international visitors again this year, who always look forward to enjoying what our
region has to offer.’
