Disabled fun bowls day well supported
THE team of Koos Erasmus (wrong arm), Dion Leaity (blindfolded), Essel Schoeman (chair) and Colin Goulie (tied feet) conquered their temporary disabilities to win the disabled awareness fun day held at the Richards Bay Bowls Club on Saturday.
The event was held in support of Bowls South Africa’s call to honour disability awareness month in November.
A large number of Zululand bowlers joined a handful of disabled bowlers to try their hand in ‘disabled bowling’, while raising funds for Zululand’s disabled bowlers who will compete at the Bowls SA disability championships in the East Rand in June next year.
Fourteen teams from Richards Bay, Empangeni, Mtunzini and St Lucia participated on Saturday.
Teams consisted of four players, with each non-disabled player having to draw a card indicating their disability for the day.
The disabilities included being blindfolded, sitting in a chair, playing with the nondominant hand and tying both legs together.
A lot of fun was had by all and the day was finished off with a braai, during which all expressed their admiration and absolute awe for the disabled players and how they manage to play the sport on equal terms.
Category prizes were awarded to the best bowlers with their temporary disability.
Prizes went to Dion Leaity (blindfolded), Danie Schoeman (tied feet), Nico Snyman (chair) and Coenie Hughes (non-dominant arm).
