Local rugby ace Muller goes international

- Richard Springorum

RICHARDS Bay open side flanker Devon Muller made his debut for the Brazilian senior rugby team against the Moari All Blacks in an historic clash played at São Paulo’s iconic Cicero Pompeu De Toledo stadium over the weekend.

Muller started for the Brizilians and had a mammoth game, but unfortunately his side went down 35-3 to a very powerful and physical Moari outfit.

The talented youngster was invited to attend the Brazil U20 rugby training camp ahead of the South American Cup tournament in 2016, after Westville Boys’ High School first team coach Dean Carelse recommended Muller to the Brazilian rugby CEO, Agustin Danza.

Muller then played in a tri-series against Argentina as part of his trials and impressed so much, that he landed a two-year contract with the Brazilian U20 and senior teams.

Muller attended Arboretum Primary School, before landing a five-year rugby bursary at Westville Boys’ High School.

While in Durban, he was selected for the KZN U16 Grant Komo Week side in 2013, missed out in 2014 owing to a knee injury and made the KZN U18 Craven Week team in 2015.

His impressive performances at Craven Week resulted in contract offers from the Sharks, Bulls, Leopards and Western Province rugby unions for 2016.

But unforeseen family issues forced him to decline and head back home to work.

He never gave up on his rugby dream though and played for the Richards Bay Rugby Club first team in 2016.

He played a major role in the side as a ball carrier and counter-attacker, which resulted in 15 tries in 14 games.

Muller played for Durban

Collegians between

2011 and 2015 while completing high school.

He captained the Westville Boys’ High sevens side and basketball team and was the first rugby teams vice-captain in his matric year (2015).

He was also awarded the Sportsman of the Year award at his school that year.

He works out in the gym twice a day, seven days a week to stay in top physical shape.

Muller hopes to get scouted and signed with an AVIVA Premiership club whilst playing in Brazil and hopes to make a long lasting career out of rugby.
