- Richard Springorum

RED Beast Boxing in Richards Bay is on a mission to develop the sport among rural communities, and on Monday donated boxing gear and training equipment for the benefit of the youth in Ngwelezana.

Professional heavyweight boxer Joshua ‘Red Beast’ Pretorius and his father/coach Corrie Pretorius set up a small gymnasium for children to utilise on a daily basis.

On top of this handover, Red Beast Boxing will once a month visit Ngwelezana to train the youngsters and identify potential fighters to move into the amateur ranks.

‘The generosity of these guys means the world to us and we appreciate their efforts in the upliftment of our community,’ said community leader Wiseman Mthiyane.

‘This set-up will help get the children off the streets and not only aid them to live a healthier and fitter lifestyle, but also give them purpose to work towards a goal.

‘This is a great day for us as residents of Boxing Road as it will help us revive the sport fully in our area. You never know whether or not a future champion will come out of these ranks.

‘Sport unites people and this is a perfect example of promoting goodwill,’ said Mthiyane.
