Upgrades at full steam at St Catherine’s
ST CATHERINE’S School recently started much needed upgrades to meet the growing numbers of staff and pupils.
Construction at the private institution started in June with the addition of three new classrooms, a state-of-the-art media centre and expansion of the staff room.
These projects became necessary after staff numbers increased from 32 to 46 and pupil numbers grew from 300 to 420 since 2010.
‘I am very excited to be part of the changes taking place at St Catherine’s and would like to encourage our learners to make use of all the opportunities which we are creating here,’ said St Catherine’s School Principal, Gillian Dalais.
The old media centre was converted into three extra classrooms, allowing for double classes from grades RR to 7.
‘The need for this was as a result of us introducing a new Grade 6 class next year, followed by an extra Grade 7 class in 2021.’
The stage in the old school hall has been incorporated in the new staff room to accommodate the increased educator numbers needed for the additional classes and subjects.
The old school hall has been converted into a media centre filled with a variety of books, resources and a computer centre.
‘The aim of the new media centre is to encourage our children to read and develop cognitively, culturally and academically,’ said Dalais.
‘We want the new media centre to be an inviting place where our pupils would want to go.’
The next upgrade phase is to convert the tennis and netball courts into an indoor multipurpose centre for sport and academic activities.
Fund-raising for this project is under way, with the project expected to be completed next year.
‘Our astro field has been a great success and with the multi-purpose indoor centre we are confident that the school will continue to draw learners to become part of the St Catherine’s family.’
