District mayor promises to provide water

- Muzi Zincume

SCORES of Mseleni community members blockaded the R22 demanding water.

They blocked the road with stones, rocks and logs, demanding to meet with uMkhanyakude District Mayor, Solomon Mkhombo.

Residents from wards 5 and 15 claimed that their taps went dry a long time ago, and no one was willing to provide them with answers about the cause of the problem.

One of the affected residents, Shongani Gumede, said furious residents decided to stage the protest because they were ignored.

‘We demand water. Water is life. We at least need boreholes,’ said Gumede.

The protest started at 5am on Wednesday.

‘These people only come to us when they canvas election votes. After the elections they disappear. We know that the only language they understand is protest action and the community is giving them just that,’ said Gumede.

Mkhombo promised that water would be restored by yesterday afternoon.

‘We urge residents to consult with us if they have concerns,’ he said.
