Commuters face bus fare increase of 8%

- Jetro Mshengu

BUS commuters in rural areas had to brace themselves for another bus fare increase which came into effect today (Thursday).

Chairperson of the Public Transportation Committee (PTC), Thabani Mthembu, announced the fare increase last week following a meeting with the Biyela Transport and Mthonjaneni Bus Transport companies.

According to Mthembu, the decision was taken after thorough consultation with all relevant stakeholders.

‘We know commuters are battling in these tough economic times, but we were forced to introduce an 8% increase because of diesel price hikes and poor road conditions which have impacted negatively on our bus maintenance costs.’

The fare increase will affect commuters who reside in Sanguye, Obuka and the Thembeni Traditional Authority.
