Cash-in-transit robbery leaves penniless pensioners stranded
HUNDREDS of pensioners returned home heartbroken and empty handed after a cashin-transit vehicle was robbed by gunmen in Nkandla on Monday morning.
The truck was en route to pension pay points at eMphahlwini, kwaDima and Emtunsundu at Nkandla when the robbery occurred.
King Cetshwayo police cluster spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, said the cash-intransit vehicle overturned after being rammed from behind by a speeding Mercedes-Benz.
‘A group of armed men emerged from the Mercedes-Benz and opened fire to scare the security guards. They disarmed two guards and took an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene.’
The incident occurred in the Ekhombe policing area. The guards sustained minor injuries and a case of robbery is under investigation.
KZN South African Social Security Agency spokesperson, Mbizeni Mdlalose, said they had been notified of the robbery incident, but declined to comment further.
‘The vehicle belongs to Easy Pay, not us,’ he said.
Attempts to obtain comment from Easy Pay were unsuccessful.
