Boxed pups ready for home adoption

- Tamlyn Jolly

TEN puppies dumped in a sealed box in Mzingazi and left to suffocate or starve, are making great strides despite their near tragic ordeal.

‘Last week Tuesday my first call of the day at about 7am was from a woman reporting a box containing puppies at the soccer grounds in Mzingazi,’ said Richards Bay SPCA inspector, Wynand Strauss.

‘I could see that the box had initially been taped securely shut, but was ripped partially open when I got to them.’

Obviously used to being fed by people, the puppies – all females – immediately came to Strauss as he approached them.

‘They were not scared, they were behaving just like puppies normally do at feeding time.’

Strauss said that despite having worms, the ‘girls’ were all in good shape and none were riddled with pests of any kind.

‘They were just very dehydrated, and ate and drank all the food and water we gave them on arrival at the SPCA.’

He said that judging by the pups’ level of dehydration, they had probably been dumped the previous afternoon.

Once at the SPCA, they were de-wormed, washed and dipped with tick and flea solution.

The playful pups are now about seven weeks old and are ready to be adopted into loving homes.

Already very low on dry puppy food, the SPCA is appealing to the public to dig deep and help feed these pups for the remainder of their time in the organisation’s care. ‘We do have quite a bit of soft, tinned food, but it is dry puppy food that we are short of,’ said SPCA Manager, Shelly Prinsloo.

‘We are obviously hoping to home these ten pups quickly, but it is breeding season and we will need puppy and kitten food during the upcoming months.’ ‘Any donations, whether animal food, toys, blankets or anything else, are welcomed with open arms and grateful hearts.’
