Celebrating the Nelson Mandela legacy
Tronox KZN Sands employees volunteered 67 minutes on July 22 to celebrate the legacy of former president Nelson Mandela. A team went to Whebede Primary School in Macambini, which is near Fairbreeze Mine.
Officially founded by the United Nations in November 2009, Mandela Day is a call for people everywhere to celebrate the late icon’s contribution to humanity by giving 67 minutes of their time for a good cause. The former president spent 67 years making the world a better place; he started the human rights campaign in South Africa in 1942.
The school suffered storm damage in 2016 and recently approached Tronox for assistance. The project was adopted as one of Mandela Day initiatives. Employees painted, fixed windows and completed other projects to make a difference at the school.
In support of the volunteers’ efforts, Managing Director Mpho Mothoa said, “I am very proud of the contribution employees are making in our communities. It is important for us to be looked at by all communities not only as contributing to their growth, but as an organisation that is committed to their sustainable development.”
