Empangeni man shot dead in home invasion

THE tragic murder of long-time Empangeni resident Frik Roodt, has rocked the community, leaving many living in fear.

The 66-year-old former banker/businessma­n was shot and killed in his home in President Swart Avenue on Sunday night.

According to a police source close to the investigat­ion, three men entered the Roodt’s home through a window.

‘The victim was sitting on the couch watching TV at the time, while his wife was in the bedroom. It is believed there was a struggle between the victim and burglars when the shooting occurred.’

A cellphone, firearm and laptop were stolen. The cellphone was tracked to the outskirts of Empangeni before the signal died. No arrests have yet been made.

Paramedics who were called to the scene said he was still alive when they arrived.

‘He sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest, which affected his lung and heart. He was struggling to breathe and paramedics administer­ed CPR for about 20 minutes, but could not save his life.’

Roodt leaves behind his wife, five children and two grandchild­ren His son Juan told the ZO that the family was struggling to come to terms with their father’s death.

‘Everything is chaotic and I had to mop up my father’s blood from the floors. My sister is flying in from overseas today and we are all still in shock.’

Long-time friend, Councillor Louis Fourie, said Frik would be remembered for his kindness.

‘Back in the day Frik was the manager of Trust Bank and he later resigned and assisted his wife at the clothing factory which they owned.’ Roodt will be cremated tomorrow (Friday). The 2018/2019 crime statistics painted a grim picture of crime in Empangeni, highlighti­ng it as one of the top ten national clusters in terms of the highest rate of burglaries.
