Unizulu student goes international

-

UNIVERSITY of Zululand final year law student, Yanelisa Menzangabom, scored an opportunity of a lifetime when he jetted off to the United States recently.

Yanelisa was one of three students selected from thousands of applicants in the country to participate in the Study of the US Institutes (SUSIs) for Student Leaders programme.

He was chosen after submitting an essay stating his reasons for wanting to go to the US and presented his academic record.

The six-week programme which ended last week, was designed for undergraduate students to expand their understanding of the United States and to improve their leadership skills.

It included classroom activities, dialogues, lectures, readings, site visits and opportunities to interact with their American peers on a college campus.

The programme began in Washington DC where the candidates were hosted by the Meridian International Centre, spending three days with different diplomatic offices and meeting international relations stakeholders.

This was followed by a visit to Memphis City in Tennessee, where they met various non-profit organisations and local government stakeholders dealing with housing issues for the homeless and gentrification in the United States of America.

The last leg was in Seattle, where the candidates were hosted by the University of Washington, in conjunction with Foundation for International Understanding through Students, who were also the facilitators of the programmes. ‘This was very educational and informative. I learned a lot,’ said Yanelisa.
