Hillside adjusts to new operational mode
HILLSIDE Aluminium, as many other corporates, has been navigating new challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Deemed an essential service during the lockdown as it assists in stabilising Eskom’s power grid, the smelter is maintaining day-to-day operations while ensuring the safety and protection of employees.
The smooth running of operations while minimising risks of infections, has been commended by staff, who say every possible measure to safeguard employees and contractors is being undertaken.
‘In these challenging times it’s important for us to remember that whether we are at work or at home, we owe it to ourselves and our colleagues to work in a way that doesn’t jeopardise anyone’s well-being.
‘Hillside has certain risk mitigation controls in place that enhance the way we work; we don’t see these additional measures as a hindrance.
‘I believe it’s safe to say that we’ve adapted effortlessly to this ‘new normal’ since the onset of Covid-19,’ said Treatment Logistics Services department’s Graham Hardwich.
Hillside Aluminium has in place stringent social distancing measures to ensure employees are always kept apart.
Additional personal hygiene measures include no sharing of personal protective equipment (PPE) or other items, and a policy of frequent and thorough hand-washing.
There is also always a fully staffed medical clinic and a doctor on site.
‘Hillsiders have chosen to rise to the challenge. We have seen how our teams have made concerted efforts to go above and beyond,’ said Reduction team manager, Ganas Jeebodh.
‘The added hygienic measures, which include daily testing before, during and after shifts, are reassuring and speak to one of our core values of just how much we care.’
Manager of Special Projects, Zanele Madinane, said this period has resulted in teams thinking and working outside the proverbial box.
‘One of the many positives in times such as these are that the true nature of people comes to the fore. We see a more caring, compassionate and supportive side.
‘Our teams have displayed a deeper closeness and appreciation for each other. We believe and know that if we continue to work together, we can overcome the hurdles of this pandemic,’ Madinane said.
