Slindokuhle makes gogo proud
FOR months during her matric year, Slindokuhle Chiya (17) constantly fought with her grandmother about her ‘disappearances’ and ‘gallivanting’ at night.
For a long time she had to explain to the old lady why she had to lock herself in her room for hours.
But gogo’s concerns were finally allayed, and her questions answered, when on Tuesday morning, Slindokuhle presented her with the results of her ‘disappearances’.
The young woman made her gogo proud, having passed matric with seven distinctions and taken first position at Khombindlela High School in Ngwelezane.
Gogo’s voice echoed throughout Mhlanga Reserve when she ululated out of pure excitement and the joy of seeing her grandchild complete high school and take the top spot.
Slindokuhle received top marks in English, IsiZulu, life orientation, accounting, economics, business studies and tourism. She will be studying towards a BCom in accounting at UKZN.
‘Last year required perseverance and dedication because it was not a normal year.
‘It was tough even for the best students because we had to study more on our own. I spent hours in my room studying, revising and doing daily activities.
‘I’m thrilled to have made my grandmother proud and she contributed to my success in a big way. She ensured I received all resources to make my studying easy and I will be forever grateful to her for her support. She has taken care of me for a long time and I hope to return the favour one day.
‘My gogo is a blessing, and all I am and hope to be is because of her,’ said Slindokuhle.
