Residents encouraged to name city’s streets

- Gugu Myeni

CITY of uMhlathuze residents will be given an opportunity to suggest new names for some streets.

This is part of the municipality’s drive to name, rename and correct the spelling of streets within its jurisdiction.

‘Areas such as Dumisani Makhaye Village, Madlanzini and Mzingazi must have their streets named properly.

‘This will be the first phase, which will then be followed by the renaming of other streets as well as the correction of spelling and orthography on other street names and geographical features,’ said uMhlathuze Communications Manager, Mdu Ncalane.

He said all proposed names will be subjected to a qualification process and members of the community will then be allowed to comment or object to them before approval by council.

New names approved will then be registered on the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for ease of communication and be referred to the provincial Geographic Names Committee for registration at provincial level.

The proposed names will then be referred to the national Geographic Names Committee for final registration and

endorsement.

‘The city encourages community members, community forums, councillors and traditional authorities to utilise this opportunity and follow all due processes.

‘The policy, however, discourages naming of streets and other geographical features after living persons. ‘Blasphemous and inappropriate names will not be considered,’ said Ncalane.

He said the process aims to rectify the historical perspective of geographical names and to improve service delivery in areas that historically did not have official street names.

Residents can submit proposed names to ward councillors or to the municipal manager via email at talk2us@umhlathuze.gov.za
