Geared up for hockey clash

- Richard Springorum

GRANTLEIGH will look to utilise home ground advantage when they compete in the fourth regional tournament of the Spar KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge on Saturday.

The hosts of the tournament will join defending champions Felixton College, as well as John Ross College, Richards Bay Christian School, St Catherine’s and Empangeni High School.

Three of the teams taking to the astro have been crowned champions in this region before, with Empangeni High bagging four titles, Grantleigh three and Felixton College two.

Teams will play five games in a round robin, with the top two teams on the leaderboard cementing their spot for the finals.

Games will be 20 minutes long, with each win earning teams four points. A draw with goals scored earns teams two points each, but only one point in goalless draws.

If the match is drawn at the final whistle in the final, it will be decided by a threeplayer penalty shoot-out.

So far, three other regional tournaments have been rolled out in quick succession, with Danville Park Girls’ High taking the first win in the Durban North region.

Wembley College won the uMvoti, uThukela and uMzinyathi regional tournament, with St Mary’s DSG bagging the Highway region.

On Sunday, Durban Girls’ High School hosts Durban Central teams, with the remaining tournaments to be completed next month.

Please note that no supporters are allowed under the current government regulations.
